Rappahannock Community College recently held a campus-wide food drive where 1,334 items and more than $700 were collected across both its main campuses at Glenns and Warsaw. Students, faculty, staff and the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School at Warsaw all contributed.
The college has a pantry on both main campuses, which provides non-perishable foods, toiletries, necessities for parents, perishable foods in cold storage, grocery store gift cards and daily snacks for students. The Culinary Arts faculty has also provided educational resources on healthy eating, budget-conscious cooking tips and information on nutrition.
Holiday meal kits are also being prepared to ensure students and their families can enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. RCC’s Food Insecurity Committee will provide 20 Thanksgiving meals for students in the greatest need.
According to RCC, approximately 30 percent of its students have reported that they worry about having enough food before their next paycheck.
