RAYMOND ROY SMOKER

Raymond Roy Smoker, 93, of Gloucester passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at his home.

Mr. Smoker was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Pennsylvania, son of the late Daniel and Hilda Smoker.

He was a member of the Providence Mennonite Church of Denbigh and the Whippoorwill Hunt Club. He was a biblical scholar, and enjoyed teaching, hunting and woodworking. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 69 years, Margaret Grace King Smoker; five devoted children, Verda Bennett and her husband Robert, Nancy Nelson and her husband Joe, Norma Brenneman and her husband Charlie, all of Newport News; Sanford Smoker and his wife Karen of Gloucester; and Marlin Smoker and his wife Terri of Coatesville, Pa.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and a sister.

The family received friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News. A funeral service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Providence Mennonite Church, 13101 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, with the Rev. Carl Mericle officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
