Raymond Elwood West, age 84, died at his home Jan. 4, 2019.

Elwood had lived his whole life in Guinea and was proud to be a lifelong Guineaman. His daughters said, “Dad was a strong, kind man, not a traveler; he had perfect peace at home where he loved gardening, and his family was always close by.” Mr. West was a member of Union Baptist Church, Achilles.  

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eva May West; four daughters, Janice Reese (Curtis), Diane Williams (Ricky), Darlene Williams (David), Eva Whitcomb (Joe); six grandchildren, Jason Reese (Dorsie), Amanda Hammond (Ben), Nikki Spiers (Aaron), Brandon Williams (Kelly), Morgan Rivera (Dominic), Katie Whitcomb, three great-grandchildren, Caroline, Bryce, Hendrix; two sisters, Ann Hall and Esther Emerson.

A funeral service conducted by Pastor Richard Whiteheart and Chester Brown was held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.  Interment followed in Gloucester Point Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, from 3-4 p.m.
