Ralph Motley to play at Arts on Main

Bluegrass musician Ralph Motley will play from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Arts on Main in Gloucester. The performance is free and open to the public.

Motley, who plays the fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, drums, harmonica and dobro, is the chosen performer for Arts on Main’s inaugural Open Juried Exhibition. He has fronted such bluegrass greats as Ricky Scaggs, Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt; he has played on the Grand Ole Opry stage; and he sang at the White House Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in 1996.

Locally, Motley plays all over the Middle Peninsula and has appeared regularly at Virginia’s Li’l Ole Opry in Mathews. He can often be heard in the morning on the radio at XTRA 99.1 FM.

The performance will kick off the Open Juried Exhibition. The show’s juror, Diana B. Gross, curator of PFAC (Peninsula Fine Arts Center) in Newport News, and many of the artists whose works she selected for the competition, will be present to meet with those attending.
