Railroad accident at Diggs Wharf

120 YEARS AGOThursday, August 23, 1906from the Mathews Journal Susan correspondent reports: There was a railroad accident on Diggs Wharf last week. The car that is used to convey the freight from the pierhead to the shore being improperly loaded, and a young man mounting on the top to keep it steady; the rails not being perfectly level, it began to shake and dumped itself in the river. Casualties: Mr. Walter Carran unceremoniously baptized by immersion, two barrels of lime converted to whitewash, two barrels of sugar brine washed, one trunk damaged to the extent of $57, one graphaphone water soaked.
