The Mathews High School varsity football team dropped to 0-2 on the season following Friday’s 35-0 loss to the Rappahannock Raiders.
“We made four big mistakes during the game: two blown pass coverages and two interceptions for touchdowns,” MHS head coach Paul White said following the shutout.
“We made an adjustment and they completed one more pass during the game,” White said. “Rappahannock really earned one touchdown outside of our mistakes. Watching the game film, our hustle and effort was much better. More players were at the ball at the end of the play, special teams looked better, so I am still optimistic about our season,” he said.
JV boys improve to 2-0
Meanwhile, the Mathews High School jayvee football team improved to 2-0 with a 14-8 win over Rappahannock last Wednesday. Owen Cullison scored both times for the JV Devils. Gus Bauby, Jeremiah Shores, Hunter Scales, and Ronald Rife led the charge defensively.
The Devils face off against Northumberland this week. The jayvee team was scheduled to host the Indians last night, while the varsity squad travels to the Northern Neck foe Friday.
