Raiders edge Blue Devils in soccer, 4-3

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team fell to the visiting Rappahannock Raiders last Wednesday, 4-3.

Having played this team a few weeks earlier and knowing Rappahannock’s strengths, Mathews knew where to put its good players, as well as where, when and how to attack. Although the Mathews defense was beefed up quite a lot, whenever the Raiders’ lightning-fast wingers had a chance to get into the goalie box, they took a shot, and that resulted in three goals scored by the Rappahannock offense in the first half.

Then, at midway through the half, an excellent penalty kick was scored by Jordan Bozza, giving Mathews a glimpse of hope.

The second half went better for the Blue Devils with Mason Kent scoring the first goal in the half but Rappahannock answered by scoring their fourth goal. In a burst of energy and concentration, Kevin Jenkins scored the third Mathews goal at 26 minutes into the second half to complete the scoring. JV Devils
