On May 29, 1930, the Mathews Journal published its “Who’s Who” Industrial Booster Edition. The editor stated that: “We are proud of the fine old county and its surrounding territory and of its businesses, institutions and home enterprise, the histories of many of which are written into this edition.”
The front page had two pictures of downtown Mathews labeled “The Busiest Little Main Street In America.” Dr. Ellis C. Richardson called the corner of Main and Church streets “Broadway and 32 Street,” reflecting the many business establishments that attracted shoppers to downtown Mathews.
In fact, since the Journal began publishing in 1904 or 1905, it had continually supported the many businessmen and their entrepreneurial efforts that help Mathews Court House develop.
