QUILLIE JAY COUNTISS

Quillie Jay Countiss, age 83, of Gloucester, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at VCU Medical Center in Richmond. He was born on Jan. 15, 1938 in Wise County, Va., to the late Eugene and Oma Countiss. Quillie spent his career serving his country in both active duty (Air Force) and civil service. He was an avid bass fisherman who won many tournaments with his son, Robert Countiss. Quillie loved his family, his “fishing buddies,” and his pets. He always had time to tell a story or strike up a conversation. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Opal Countiss; two sons, Scott and Megan Countiss, Robert and Mary Countiss; five grandchildren, Chelsea Countiss, Anna Countiss-Buhl (Ben Buhl), Jake Countiss, Abigail Countiss, Rebecca Countiss, and a great-granddaughter, Ava Acotanza. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Countiss Carden Sharp. The family received friends on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home. A graveside service with military honors, conducted by the Rev. Robert Brunjes, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at Windsor Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum, Dutton.
