Pump problems result in Point beach closures

Problems with the grinder pump at Gloucester Point Beach Park caused the Beach House concession stand and the adjacent restrooms to close for five days during June, said Carol Steele, director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The closures were sometimes for only a portion of one day and sometimes for a day or longer, Steele said. A new grinder pump has been ordered and should be installed soon.

Grinder pump problems have been a combination of an aging unit—with the teeth on the unit being worn out—and beachgoers flushing diapers, feminine products and socks and other items down the toilets. Portable toilets are available elsewhere at the beach and have remained open.

The showers also had to be closed temporarily, and valves are being replaced on those outdoor units. Steele said those units receive heavy use and are impacted by sand being washed down the drain and by environmental factors at the beach.
