Pullen advances to state wrestling tournament

Two Gloucester High School wrestlers—Devon Pullen (170 lbs.) and Matt Favazzo (113 lbs.)—placed in their respective weight classes at last weekend’s Eastern Region Tournament at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.

Pullen posted a 4-1 record to finish in third place, while Favazzo compiled a 2-3 record to take sixth place. Pullen’s third-place finish qualifies him for the Group AAA state tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at Oscar Smith. Pullen won a 7-4 decision over Amir Horton of Great Bridge in the consolation finals.

 

A total of 10 Gloucester wrestlers competed last weekend. Anthony Monahan (120 lbs.), Robert Leso (160 lbs.) and Ethan Newell (182 lbs.) each went 2-2, but failed to place. Isaac Chaney (126 lbs.), Jordan Schaal (132 lbs.), Levi Reeves (195 lbs.) and Jerry Woodlief (285 lbs.) finished with identical 1-2 records, while Steven Zavatski (220 lbs.) failed to win in the double-elimination tournament.
