Probe continues into Mathews shooting death

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a shooting that resulted in the death last Thursday of 61-year-old Steven Allen Eary.

According to information provided by the sheriff’s office, dispatchers received two separate 911 calls from the 2600 block of Ridgefield Road at 9:30 p.m. on May 4 advising of an altercation and shots fired.

Callers reported that two victims had been shot and one was unresponsive, said the release.

Deputies and medical personnel arrived on the scene to find Eary suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a woman, was treated for a grazed wound to the shoulder and released.

A 21-year-old man was determined to be the suspect in the shooting, said Williams. He was taken into custody for questioning but was later released. No arrest has been made.
