It was resolved that the ministers of Mathews County make from their pulpits an earnest appeal to their respective congregations to refrain from encouraging and patronizing Sunday excursions on steamboats. It further resolved to hold a union meeting in furtherance of this objective, at the Central Methodist Church on Sunday evening, Aug. 25th, to continue as long thereafter as desirable, at which meetings suitable sermons will be preached by the ministers of the Gospel located in Mathews County.

At a meeting of the ministers of Mathews Court House, held on Monday, 12th inst., on motion it was resolved to present a petition from the ministers and other Christians of Mathews County to the authorities of the Old Dominion Line, to discontinue the Sunday excursions, so demoralizing to the community, and injurious to the cause of Christ, from Norfolk to East River.
