The Mathews County Woman’s Club began its new season on Monday, Sept. 14, with a prayer breakfast prepared by the women of Saint Paul Comfort Church in Susan. The program’s featured guest was David Evans of Gloucester Point, a native of Gloucester, England, who spoke about the early Church of England in the Mathews and Gloucester areas. Evans said that after King Henry VIII became the head of the Church of England, the ruling monarch of England was always the head of the Anglican Church. After the American Revolution (the British call it the American fight for independence), many of the church buildings fell into disrepair, and people stole the bricks to build their own homes.
