Poster contest winner

Artist Jordan Hunley, a 2022 graduate of Mathews High School, was named the winner of this year’s Mathews Market Days Poster Contest. Market Days chair Morgan Hudgins, at left, unveiled the winning poster during a ceremony Saturday at the Bay School Community Arts Center. The painting features a Chesapeake Bay deadrise workboat named after the contest theme, “Rise with the Tide,” as it heads toward New Point Comfort Lighthouse under a colorful early morning sky with birds flying overhead. Floating in the water and lying along the shoreline are images of items that people often identify with Mathews—a painting, a jar of honey, a guitar and a colorful quilt. The 18-year-old Hunley, at right, is one of the youngest winners of the annual poster contest. Copies (signed by the artist) will be available for purchase during the festival, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 in and around the court green.
