Post 75 junior baseball team advances to state

After an 11-1 regular season, the Gloucester American Legion Post 75 junior team (ages 14-17) knew it had a good shot at the state tournament, but it had to fight to get there.

Favored to win the District 3 title, the team faced the Deltaville Post 241-G team in the first round of the district playoffs July 26 at Gloucester High School. Deltaville won that game, 5-2.

For Post 75 to stay in contention, the team had to win both games of a doubleheader last Thursday at GHS. Post 75 first beat the Williamsburg Post 39-G team, 11-6, before facing Deltaville Post 241-G again. The rematch with Post 241 stretched over nine innings and into the early morning hours Friday before Post 75 finally triumphed with a 17-14 win. The teams were scheduled to play for the district title Friday, but rain led them to call it a draw and both lineups headed to the state tourney in Spotsylvania this week.
