Poquoson hands MHS 46-43 loss

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity basketball team finished its regular season with a disappointing loss to Poquoson last Thursday evening, as the Islanders hit a three-pointer with less than five seconds remaining to win 46-43.

The Lady Devils ended the regular season with an 18-3 record; 7-1 in conference play.

 Mathews trailed for most of last Thursday’s home game, with Poquoson holding a 9-4 lead after the first period, 16-13 at the half and 31-29 at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Devils trailed by as many as 11 points during the third period but fought hard to come back and finally take their first lead of the night one minute remaining, 33-31. Mathews would lead by as many as five points during that fourth and final period. Free throws proved to be a major downfall for the Devils, they sunk only nine of 28.
