Poquoson blanks MHS

The Mathews High School soccer teams traveled to Poquoson on Monday evening to face off against their Class 3A opponents. Unfortunately, both the varsity and JV Devils came up empty, losing to the Islanders by 2-0 and 3-0 margins, respectively.

The varsity game started shakily for the Blue Devils, but Poquoson was unable to score despite taking multiple shots. Possession eluded the Blue Devils as they worked hard to keep the opposition from scoring. Several saves were made not only by the keeper but by the defensive line as well; a header from Calvin Kramer narrowly deflected a shot over the crossbar and a clearance from Tyler Jackson kept the ball from crossing the open goal.

Poquoson held the ball for most of the first half, but with no positive results; at halftime, the score was still tied, 0-0. Blue Devil goalie Jackson Putt played exceptionally well throughout the match, finishing the game with 16 saves. Unfortunately, the volume of shots from Poquoson finally broke the ice. A ...
