Saturday may have been an unseasonably warm day for February, that doesn’t mean jumping into the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay was anything like a pleasurable experience. But a large group did precisely that as a fundraiser for backpacks and other school supplies for Mathews County children. Organized by Mathews Elementary School kindergarten teacher Amy Ashberry, the third annual Mathews Polar Plunge held at Haven Beach raised $1,550, with more money still coming in. Proceeds will go to August’s back-to-school No Walls Community Day that was started seven years ago by Patrick Billups and organized by multiple local churches.
