Polar Plunge

The second annual Mathews Polar Plunge, to raise money for school supplies for students in the community, was “a definite success,” according to event organizer Amy Ashberry, a kindergarten teacher at the county’s elementary school. A large group of supporters showed up early Saturday morning at Haven Beach, pledging at least $10 to take a dip in the icy cold water. With temps around 26 degrees and some snow still on the ground, “a bunch of crazy people” ran into the bay, raising a total of $1,264, Ashberry wrote on Facebook. Above, participants line up at the water’s edge with Ashberry raising her hand to give a signal to the plungers. Below, they emerge quickly from the frigid waters.
