Pointers beat Devils, 44-7

The Mathews High School varsity football team started out strong on Friday night against West Point, taking a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Blue Devils would do, as they fell to the visiting Pointers by a 44-7 margin, dropping to 1-7 on the season.

The Devils took the opening kickoff and picked up a couple first downs off runs by quarterback Chance Spencer, advancing the ball to West Point’s 40-yard line before they were forced to punt.

A few plays later, West Point fumbled on its own 26-yard line. Spencer picked up a first down and, on the next play, ran the ball in from the 16-yard line for the score. Patrick Blake’s PAT kick put Mathews ahead, 7-0.
