Going to the Jackson Hewitt office in Gloucester to get his 2022 taxes done paid off in a big way for M.A. Tillage.

The Gloucester Point resident was a grand-prize winner in Jackson Hewitt Tax Services’ Double Your Refund sweepstakes, one of only 40 nationwide in a promotion to celebrate Jackson Hewitt’s 40th anniversary.

Tillage won the cash prize equivalent of the value of the winner’s federal tax refund, with winners awarded a maximum match of $15,000, and a minimum of $1,500. In Tillage’s case, that’s somewhere around $1,900, he said.

When he was first notified by phone and email, Tillage was a bit skeptical. “I thought it was a scam,” he said. After a quick check, he soon realized it was real.

Asked what he planned to do with his unexpected windfall, he said he’d probably save it. “I have plenty of toys already; I don’t need any more,” he quipped.

Tillage has been coming to the Gloucester office of Jackson Hewitt, which is located at 6583 Market Drive at the Shoppes at Gloucester, for about 5-6 years to get his taxes done. “I know the people here,” he said. “They’re like family.”

“We’re so happy he’s been with us all these years and trusts us and keeps coming back,” Vickie Lemon said. Franchisees Vickie and William Lemon have been operating the Gloucester office for about 35 years; they manage other offices in Tappahannock, Kilmarnock and the Eastern Shore.

Taxpayers who file a 2022 federal tax return at any Jackson Hewitt location within the sweepstakes period are automatically entered into the sweepstakes.

Taxpayers not filing with Jackson Hewitt may also enter one of the weekly drawings by mailing in an entry by the Monday following the week that their federal tax return was filed with the IRS within the sweepstakes period.

Winners are currently being selected in weekly random drawings during the 12-week entry period. All selected winners will be notified by email and phone.
