Point Baptist contest has a sweet ending

The rain may have put a damper on the Gloucester Point Baptist Church’s annual fall fair last month, but not on the cooks who were there for the dessert contest. They regrouped and held their contest a week later. Jeannie Fitzgerald spearheaded the event and helped tremendously in making the special day such a success.

The contest was divided into three sections: men’s cakes, women’s pies, and kids’ (variety) with the winning entries receiving awards for taste or appearance, and in some case taking both honors. Melissa Ashe had made arrangements for trophies to be presented to first-, second- and third-place winners.

The judges had a difficult time in deciding on the final outcome; however, after tasting and re-tasting in the kids’ division Kortney Thompson won first place in both taste and appearance; Dalton Thompson received second in appearance and third in flavor; Kristine Turner was awarded third in appearance and second in taste.
