Playoff scheduling a bit of a nightmare

Basketball playoffs in Mathews are a bit uncertain at present, following several hits by Old Man Winter.

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball team was scheduled to face Chesterfield Community Tuesday night in the first round of the Conference 42 tournament. However, not long after the Chesterfield bus arrived at MHS, it was turned around to go back home due to Tuesday’s larger-than-expected snowfall.

That game was rescheduled to last night as the first game in a doubleheader, with the MHS girls playing West Point in the nightcap in their Conference 42 tournament game. Those games were still tentatively scheduled to go ahead as planned, in spite of school being closed on Wednesday, MHS Athletic Director Derek Kibler said Wednesday morning. However, when the winners of those games play next is anyone’s guess.

The MHS indoor track’s participation in the state meet at Liberty University on Wednesday and Thursday was cancelled, Kibler said.
