The Garden Club of Gloucester and Mathews and Gloucester County have installed a commemorative plaque on the inner wall of the historic courthouse to honor the club’s partnership with Gloucester County and the lasting improvements made to the court circle in the early 1930s. The plaque is one of the club’s gifts to the county in advance of the GCGM’s 100th anniversary celebration in June 2028. The new marker recognizes a community effort that began during the Great Depression, when the Garden Club of Gloucester sought to beautify and improve public spaces across the county. One area identified for improvement was the court circle, which at the time had no wall or fence and allowed cars and wagons to pull directly up to the old buildings. To raise funds for the project in the 1930s, the club organized a Country Fete featuring booths with fancy articles, cakes, rummage and other items for sale.
