Planting time

he Gloucester Daffodil Club, in collaboration with Gloucester County Public Schools and Brent & Becky’s Bulbs, sponsored the planting of 1,980 “Carlton” daffodils at the entrance to Page Middle School on Nov. 23. A hearty group of club members came to watch Jay Hutchens and Jonathan Wisely of Brent & Becky’s, who put the company’s bulb-planting machine to work, planting all the bulbs in about half an hour. The grounds manager for GCPS Jimmy Viars said, it’s “some of the worst soil in Gloucester,” but it is now improved with daffodil bulbs. Next spring—and for many years to come—ribbons of bright yellow daffodils will bloom at the entrance to the school, to delight students, teachers and staff, and the considerable number of people passing by the school entrance on T.C. Walker Road. In top photo, Hutchens loads the planter with bulbs. Below, he drives the plow-like planter as Wisely trails behind to make sure everything is working properly.
