Plans underway for Revolutionary Week in Mathews

Speaking at the April 24 meeting of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors, Forrest Morgan, immediate past president of the Mathews Historical Society, provided an update on that organization’s activities, especially July’s Revolutionary Week in Mathews.

During that week, Morgan said, there will be performances of Judy Ward’s “Crickets on a Hill” musical June 30-July 1 and a two-day reenactment of the Battle of Cricket Hill on July 7-8. The 1776 battle resulted in Virginia’s colonial governor Lord Dunmore losing his last foothold in America.

Morgan also told of an underwater survey being conducted during the past week by archaeologists of the area where Dunmore’s ships were said to have been anchored during the battle.
