The Mathews Volunteer Fire Department is making progress on plans to convert the former Boys and Girls Club building on Church Street into a modern, well-equipped fire station to replace Station 1 in downtown Mathews.
Site plans, floor plans, and exterior elevations for the renovations will be on display during the department’s annual Open House, to be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the firehouse on Brickbat Road.
Troy Garrett, project liaison for the fire department, said interior demolition has begun on the front part of the building, which will house the living quarters and public-facing areas of the building, while debris removal has begun on the back section (a former gymnasium), where the fire apparatus will be housed. He said the structure is being reinforced to withstand higher wind loads as renovations move forward.
