Planners to consider wedding venue application

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors and Mathews County Planning Commission will conduct public hearings on three zoning matters when they meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse.

Two applications relate to a proposal of Harvey and Sherri Hamm of Gloucester to establish a wedding and events venue in a large barn they own on an 18.14-acre property on Greene Road in the Glebe.

The Hamms’ property consists of a home on a portion of the parcel zoned waterfront residential, and farmland zoned rural. Planning and zoning director Thomas Jenkins explained that while temporary reception facilities such as a wedding venue are allowed in the residential zone through conditional use permits, the barn is located on a portion of the property zoned rural.

The Hamms applied to amend the zoning ordinance to allow such venues in the rural district through the conditional use permit, and also applied for such a permit.
