Planners table tourist home request

The Mathews County Planning Commission took no action Tuesday night after a joint public hearing with the Mathews County Board of Supervisors on a resident’s application for a conditional use permit for a tourist home in the Misti Cove subdivision at Hallieford.

Robert E. Short Jr. and his wife, Gail C. Short, of Rockville, Virginia, applied for the CUP. The Shorts have been operating their vacation home as a tourist home for the past three-and-a-half years, but a neighbor recently complained about the use to the planning and zoning office. Planner Thomas Jenkins told the commission that the office advised the couple to apply for a conditional use permit to bring the property into compliance with the county’s zoning ordinance.

Jenkins said that the zoning amendments his office has proposed would apply to all homes in the subdivision unless the decision is made by the planning commission and the board of supervisors to target only to the Shorts’ parcel. He explained ...
