Planners table decision on hauling business request

The Mathews County Planning Commission tabled a decision Tuesday on an application by John W. Allen of J&Z Hauling LLC for after-the-fact approval of a conditional use permit to operate a trucking/hauling business on two parcels of land in Cardinal. The commission, however, supported a text amendment to the zoning ordinance that could eventually allow the business to operate at the site.

The decisions came after an evening of four joint public hearings with the Mathews County Board of Supervisors. Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse on Court Street. They are expected to take up the matters on which the planning commission made recommendations.

During Allen’s public hearing, he touted the cleanliness of his trucking business and his efforts to clean up the property, and he said he had reduced the size of his trucking fleet and would have only six trucks by the end of the week.
