Planners table action on comp plan changes

The Mathews County Planning Commission voted to table action on proposed changes to the county’s comprehensive plan after a brief joint public hearing with the board of supervisors on Tuesday.

The only resident who spoke during the public hearing was Carol Bova of Mathews, who pointed out that much of the demographic data in the plan is outdated and that the shoreline mileage stated in the plan—280 miles—is inconsistent with a recent report by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, which she said states that the county has 347.42 miles of shoreline.

Bova submitted 18 pages of changes she suggested should be made to the comp plan. In it she mentions such things as outdated projections about projects that have been completed, offers specific updates of demographic data, and criticizes some of the data sources used by the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission, which was hired to update the plan.
