Planners support reception facility in Susan

A temporary reception facility proposed for a home in Susan received the backing of the Mathews County Planning Commission Tuesday night after the commission held a joint public hearing with the county supervisors.

Erin Rook of Spring Grove in Surry County, has requested a conditional use permit to offer her home on Bellevue Road as an event venue for small weddings, receptions and family reunions. The property is owned by Frank and Virginia Trant, also of Spring Grove.

During the public comment period, no one spoke against the proposed project, and Planning and Zoning Director John Shaw presented a letter from a neighbor expressing support for it.

The planning commission voted to recommend approval of the project to the board of supervisors with a number of conditions attached that are intended to both ensure compliance with the county’s regulations governing such matters as access, parking, signage, and lighting, and to reduce any effect the activities might have on neighbor...
