Planners support boatbuilding proposal

The Mathews County Planning Commission voted Tuesday to support an application for a conditional use permit for a craft wooden boatbuilding business on Rains Lane in Bohannon. The action came after a joint public hearing with the Mathews County Board of Supervisors.

Bruce W. Keeling III, who applied for the permit, seeks to place a 20’ x 48’ shed on his 4.6-acre waterfront residential property in order to build boats to sell. The boats will be built by hand, said planner James Knight.

During the hearing, there were no comments from the public either in support of or against the application, and Knight said that Keeling’s neighbors had generally expressed support for the endeavor.

Supervisors Jack White and Charles Ingram expressed support for the proposed business.

The board is expected to vote on the application at its Tuesday, Dec. 19 meeting.
