Planners recommend denial

The Mathews Planning Commission met Tuesday night at the historic courthouse to discuss a proposed conditional use permit to allow an aviation facility (helipad) at 166 Old Farm Road on Gwynn’s Island.

After a brief discussion, the planners voted to recommend that county supervisors deny the helipad request.Planner Billy Cook made a motion right away to vote to recommend denial of the application. He cited safety issues, noise problems and preserving the overall peace and harmony of the neighborhood as his reasons for declining the application.

“I feel this is not what the neighborhood signed on for when they moved there,” said planner Danette Machen.The other planners echoed their concerns and unanimously voted to recommend denial of the application.
