Planners recommend denial of temporary reception facility

The Mathews County Planning Commission voted by a 5-2 margin Tuesday night not to support an application by Gloucester residents Harvey and Sherri Hamm for a conditional use permit for a temporary reception facility on property they own in the Glebe.

Dissenting votes were cast by Beth Davis and David Rollins. The matter will come before the board of supervisors this Tuesday for a final decision.

The Hamms came before a joint public hearing of the commission and the Mathews County Board of Supervisors in June to make the request. During the hearing, residents of the Glebe expressed concern about having such a facility in their waterfront neighborhood, pointing out that it would be too close to neighbors, that there would be problems with emergency access, and that noise from weddings and other events would create a disturbance.
