Planners recommend denial of change to zoning ordinance

The Mathews County Planning Commission voted to recommend that supervisors deny a request to amend the zoning ordinance following a joint public hearing with the county board on Tuesday.

Planners also voted to recommend that the supervisors table a request for a conditional use permit for a temporary reception facility on Greene Road in the Glebe.

Planning and Zoning Director Thomas Jenkins had made the request for a change to the zoning ordinance on behalf of a couple, Harvey and Sherri Hamm of Gloucester, who seek a conditional use permit to offer a venue for weddings and other events at the site.

Part of the property is zoned waterfront residential, which allows such a temporary reception facility with a conditional use permit. However, the part of the property where the barn is located that the couple plan to convert for such use is zoned rural, which doesn’t allow that use.
