Planners recommend approval for new Dollar General in Mathews

The Mathews Planning Commission voted to recommend approval for a conditional use permit to build a Dollar General in Cobbs Creek during its joint meeting with the Board of Supervisors Tuesday night in the Mathews High School auditorium.

The applicant, Rhetson Companies, requested the CUP to build a 10,640-square-foot retail building (i.e., Dollar General) at 1909 Buckley Hall Road in Cobbs Creek. The 28-acre property was rezoned from Rural (RU) to Business-2 (B-2) at the request of Rhetson in July. The property is currently vacant and surrounding developments include agricultural fields, single-family homes, an auto repair shop, a gas station, a retail store, undeveloped commercial land and two churches.

John Parker, project manager for Rhetson, said that the Dollar General would have an assortment of produce, dairy and meat available to customers.

“It’s a new prototype store,” said Parker. These stores began rolling out this year and only a few are in operation now.
