Planners endorse Dollar General permit request

The Mathews County Planning Commission on Tuesday night voted unanimously to recommend that the board of supervisors approve an application for a Conditional Use Permit to allow construction of a Dollar General store at Hudgins. The decision was made after a joint public hearing with the board of supervisors.

This is the second application for a 9,100-square-foot building at the proposed site, which currently is developed with a two-story home owned by Gilbert and Laverne Ackes. However, the developer this time is PAR3 Development Group of Aberdeen, North Carolina, rather than Venture Properties, which is also a North Carolina firm.

During the joint public hearing, planner Thomas Jenkins said that Venture Properties had not developed the site after being issued a CUP last year because it could not come to an agreement with an adjacent property owner for a Virginia Department of Transportation-required shared entrance and internal parcel connection that would avoid multiple entrances ...
