Planners endorse Brambles rezoning request

The Mathews County Planning Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to recommend that the board of supervisors approve a request for a rezoning in Mathews Court House. The decision followed a joint public hearing conducted with the board.

The Brambles, a company that serves the needs of intellectually disabled adults, has requested the rezoning. The property that would be rezoned, if approved, is the former Mathews Professional Offices, which is adjacent to the current day support facility that The Brambles operates on Main Street. The property is recognizable for the distinctive peach color of the two-story building at the site.

Currently Business 2, the zoning designation would be changed to Residential 2. Planning and zoning director John Shaw said the property was zoned R-2 until 2002, when the former owners requested that it be rezoned to B-2 so they could operate professional offices there. The surrounding properties are largely zoned R-2.
