One of the nation’s largest fitness franchises is coming to Gloucester. Planet Fitness is set to open its doors this spring in the Shoppes at Gloucester in a 16,000-square-foot space near Ollie’s and Tractor Supply.

Brother and sister team Michael Barnes and Amanda Williamson, both of Williamsburg, said they own the franchise along with their parents Ken and Sharree Ryder of Northern Virginia. They are excited about bringing a Planet Fitness to Gloucester, which they say prides itself in fostering a relaxing, non-judgmental workout environment.

“Our family has been in the fitness business for over 30 years,” Barnes said. Their father owned gyms in Northern Virginia and discovered the Planet Fitness franchise while vacationing in Florida over a decade ago. “He walked in and a lightbulb went off,” he said.
