Salty Dog Pizzeria, a new downtown Mathews business, will be opening this month on Route 198 near the laundromat. The business is located in the same storefront that housed several restaurants over the years, including Sal’s Pizza and Grandma’s Pizzeria.

Owner Jessie Messinger said she’ll offer pizzas, subs, appetizers, and a salad bar on a carry-out basis, with limited dine-in availability at first. Later, she expects to be able to expand to more seating and possibly offer delivery services.

Fresh dough and marinara sauce from Messinger’s own recipe will be the basis of the pizzas, and there will be gluten-free and vegan options, she said. A number of specialty pizzas will be offered, including seafood, margarita, and barbecue using locally-made barbecue. Pizza by the slice will be offered at lunch time.
