Phyllis Agatha Russell, age 85, of Hayes, died on Friday, November 21, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born on October 11, 1940 in Pineville, Kentucky to the late Willie and Bobbie Elizabeth Lunce Hobbs. She was a graduate of Red Bird High School and Indiana College & Bethesda School of Nursing in 1958. She married the love of her life, David Arthur Russell, in 1962. Phyllis was a registered nurse and worked for the Fredericksburg Health Department in their clinic and for Stafford County Schools as a teacher and a school nurse. She loved to travel with her family, some highlights being to the Outer Banks and to Lake Gaston. Phyllis and David were very involved in Red Bird Missions and church-affiliated missions, two of which led them to Russia and Korea. She was a woman of strong faith having active membership at Ebenezer UMC and Widewater UMC, both in Stafford County, and Susanna Wesley UMC in Gloucester. She volunteered with the food pantry, delivered meals to those in need, organizing Bible studies and was a member of the York River Circle of The King’s Daughters & Sons. She was also on the Coleman’s Crossing Activities Committee. In her free time, she loved to be outdoors tending to her flowers and spending time with family and friends. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, David Arthur Russell. Phyllis is survived by her son, Shannon Arthur Russell; daughter, Lisa Russell Laufer (Art); her grandchildren, Chad (Morgan), Abby (Ryan), Jasiah, Eric, and Eddie (Stacy), and great-granddaughter, Ava. She is also survived by her sister, Hannah Sue Rawls (Phil). The family would like to thank Riverside Hospice, Doctor Sarah West, and Phyllis’s caregivers, Laura Garrett and Gerrilyn Ballow for their loving care. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Coleman’s Crossing Clubhouse, 7027 Coleman’s Crossing Avenue, Hayes, Va. 23072 on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 1-3 p.m. The inurnment at Quantico National Cemetery will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 1 p.m., officiated by Pastor Mark Miler.
