Petsworth Elementary finds way to keep kids moving

At a time when most elementary school children are limited to once-a-week sessions of physical education, Petsworth Elementary physical education teacher Margaret Watkins is finding ways to keep kids, and staff members, moving at her school.

Watkins held her annual Turkey Trot on Friday at Petsworth with the assistance of teachers and 28 volunteers. The event collected 845 food items and got the children outside for a race around their campus.

After the race, the top winners received medals and all the runners got a turkey pencil, courtesy of the Petsworth PTA. School community education coordinator Cindy Thomas also pitched in with a turkey that is awarded to a lucky volunteer through a drawing, and this year the winner was a delighted Christine Cain.

Following the awards ceremony, the Petsworth Ambassadors, a group of fourth and fifth graders chosen to be student leaders, helped pack up the food collection.
