Petco opens Gloucester store

Petco, a pet supply business that operates in more than 30 states, opened its first store in Gloucester County Monday in the new section at Fox Mill Center near Walmart. Grand opening festivities are planned for this weekend, with giveaways and drawings for prizes.

This location, which has 12,500 square feet, is one of the chain’s new “Nexus” stores, said assistant store leader Chris Houk of Newport News. This new format, one of four the chain utilizes, has low-profile racks so staff can more readily see customers who might need assistance while shopping.

“Educating people about pets is one of our goals,” Houk said. To that end, the store stocks all types of pet food, accessories and treats.

Also, Petco sells an assortment of parakeets and “pocket” pets such as hamsters, and some snakes. The chain does not sell snakes and other living things from the wild anymore, instead using select breeders to help ensure healthier snakes, turtles and oth...
