Percy E. Smith, 83, of Bena, died July 21, 2014 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Marines and was a mechanic. Being from a family of workboat builders he knew first hand about what it took to build boats and was also a master mechanic in outboard motors. He enjoyed hydroplane racing, duck hunting and “a good cigar.” He was a friend to everyone he met and loved his family, especially his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by parents, Eddie and Mary Smith, and brother, Eddie Smith Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Catherine Smith; daughter, Tammy Greggs and husband Paul; sons, Anthony Smith and Michael Smith; sisters, Pauline Smith and Josephine Suthers; brothers, Joe Smith and Danny Smith, and grandchildren, Benjamin and Brendan.
A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bud Goude will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2014, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment with military honors will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden. The family received friends Wednesday, July 23, 2014, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
