A Mathews man died after he was hit by a vehicle while walking down a county road early Sunday morning. The victim was identified as Michael Anthony Altman, 28, of Circle Drive in Susan, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Anaya said the Mathews Sheriff’s Office called state police to investigate the accident just after 4 a.m. Sunday. She said state police determined that a 2005 Kia Sorento traveling east on Route 14 in Port Haywood struck Altman, who was walking in the eastbound lane, at about 3:55 a.m. She said Altman died at the scene.

The driver of the Kia, a 20-year-old Mathews resident, was not injured. Anaya said neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the accident.

This is the first traffic fatality in Mathews in 2015. ...
