Peasley teacher recognized as Educator of Year

Peasley Middle School life science teacher Judy Gwartney-Green has been recognized as the 2014 Regional Educator of the Year by the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The award included a $2,500 grant for Peasley to use for environmental education programs.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a Maryland-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the Chesapeake Bay through education, outreach and restoration. Gwartney-Green, who was nominated by her colleague Stephanie Sowers, accepted the award at the Maryland General Assembly.

Gwartney-Green also traveled to Washington, D.C., this month for a session highlighting the National Estuarine Research Reserve program during “Coast Day” on Capitol Hill. She served as a Virginia representative for local school teachers, providing a case study of how her partnership with Dr. William Reay and Sarah Nuss of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Center at Virginia Institute of Marine Science has helped her and her students become better stewards of ...
