PATRICK ‘PJ’ OWENS

Patrick “PJ” Owens, age 91, of Gloucester, died on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Pat was born on July 3, 1933, to the late Anna O’Malley and Alvah Augustine Owens, Sr. Patrick proudly served in the U.S. Army. During his time stationed in Japan, he had a band with a few other Army buddies. He then worked at Norfolk AphidBase, processing documents and writing manuals on missile assembly and maintenance. In his free time, he ran and repaired World War II carbon arc searchlights. While living in Portsmouth, PJ read about a talent search at Donk’s Theater. He sang the “old country” like Hank Williams, who he loved so much. He played for his beloved Donk’s for 15 years. In addition to singing the classic country, he could yodel and cattle call. Even after leaving Donk’s, folks still appreciated his talents when he would serenade them in public. PJ’s talents continued on into his role in the St. Therese Catholic Church Choir. He was so devoted to his faith and to his church. All parishioners knew he was spontaneous and one of a kind. He was loved by all. In addition to his parents, PJ was preceded in death by his brother, Alvah “Peppy” Augustine Owens Jr., and daughter, Nancy Owens Partridge. He is survived by his wife, Anna Owens; daughter, Julie Owens Yarborough (Allen); step-children, Sandy Lennon (Robert) and Bobby Walston, Jr. (Ruby) and brother Johnny Owens. He is also survived by many beloved grandchildren, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
