Painting on Main

Plein Air Artist Kirk Larsen of Hicksville, New York, chats with a passerby while painting the firehouse on Gloucester Main Street during Saturday’s Paint Main, a two-hour competition among the 20 guest artists who were invited to participate in this year’s Gloucester Arts Festival. Community artists participated in a separate competition during the same time frame. There was a steady drizzle of rain during the competition, but artists gamely painted under building overhangs, umbrellas, and even vehicle hatchbacks. Julie Eichenlaut of Gloucester, who brought her family to watch the competition, said, “It’s more exciting in the rain. It gives an extra air of adventure. I love that the rain doesn’t stop the art.”
